KIDS — Create your Mostranimale!

A workshop to develop creativity through collage and contemporary art. Inspired by the exhibition *Ephemera* by Dutch artist Juul Kraijer, we will create fantastical animals together using collage techniques.

Activities

  • Vision and observation: After viewing the photographic and video works, ask the children to observe carefully. How are these animals powerful and also a bit mysterious? Why do these images of women seem magical or almost like fairies?
  • Choice of Elements: The children will choose printed images and frames to cut out: for example, they can combine the head of a woman with the body of an eagle or create a scene where a giant snake is near a mysterious figure. The goal is to combine realistic elements with abstract backgrounds to simulate a dream.
  • Creation of the Collage: Once the cutouts are selected, the children will begin assembling the collages, adding details with colors and markers to create dreamlike atmospheres (e.g., fog, light effects).
  • Sharing and Storytelling: Once the collages are completed, each child can share with the others the "dream story" they imagined. What does the collage represent for them? Is it a happy or scary dream?

Juul Kraijer

Juul Kraijer was born in Assen. She studied at the Rotterdam Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in 1994 with a series of large-format charcoal drawings. Her primary mediums are drawing, photography, and collage. She occasionally creates sculptures and video works.
