UN_I[N]VERSO — Gianluca Iadema

Recontemporary presents UN_I[N]VERSO, the first solo exhibition by Bern-based Italian artist Gianluca Iadema. It is an audiovisual sculpture in which lights, dark areas, metal cages, multidirectional amplified sound and video projections act and intertwine.
Iadema’s work arises from the desire to explore the broad concept of matter, between concreteness and transparency, with the aim of creating a system in which different types of media can merge. Not a looped music that repeats itself during the hours of the day, in the museum hall, but a sound path that can be articulated in a narration, an evolution, a dramaturgical form. UN_I[N]VERSO can be summarized as a slow and constant zoom that starts from macroscopic dimensions (digital landscapes) and then enters the city, details, dreamlike deviations and returns. Each element that is contained can become a container and vice versa. Starting from a phenomenological approach, Iadema first classified the different constituents of audiovisual sculpture according to their material characteristics, to find those points of convergence and divergence and create a stronger interdependence between them. The walls of Recontemporary are therefore invaded by sounds, shadows of grids, intermittent opacities, appearances and disappearances of structures, films.
“I am looking for an artistic form,” says the artist, “in which the spectator perceives the various aesthetic dimensions (music, cinema, theatre, choreography) as a unity.”
Can we conceive sound as a material element? The day after the inauguration, the artist will hold a panel at Recontemporary, from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm, which will investigate his artistic practice: how multimedia composition can be understood, analyzed and realized and how to conceive the different media as part of the same inseparable system, or as one the extension of the other, trying to analyze the work in its entirety, replacing the dialectical approach with the rhizomatic one.

Composer, visual artist and performer Gianluca Iadema works with a multidisciplinary approach to music, video and installation, creating an artistic typology that encompasses many of his expressions: sound, image, sculpture, including performance, light and everything in between. This creates an artistic form in which the viewer no longer perceives them as separate, but rather experiences them as a whole.
In his artistic practice the interdependence between visual and auditory elements is of fundamental importance, as are the influences of architecture and cinema. These elements are integrated within a conceptual framework aimed at investigating themes such as matter and imperfection. Regardless of the medium used, narrative in its abstract form is essential, originating from objects found in the personal and collective memory and subconscious. His works represent an exploration that seamlessly merges and transforms the digital and analog realms, as well as reality and imagination.
In fact, the artist creates through the artistic work a context in which the viewer becomes the protagonist, bringing out the processes and elevating the background to the subject.
In terms of sound, it focuses on the abstraction of different musical styles, such as techno, glitch and pop music, fused with contemporary classical concepts.
