The sun has no shadow — Rebecca Salvadori

The Sun Has No Shadow is a screening event that explores aspects of techno culture, both as an individual experience and as a form of collective ritual. Through the films Tresor Tapes and The Sun Has No Shadow by Rebecca Salvadori, the exhibition develops according to a binary dynamic that activates a generative tension between opposite poles – London/Berlin, archive/affective memory, individual experience/collective ritual. A third film Empathy draws attention to silence and portraiture. On February 26 at 3 pm, a conversation between the artist Rebecca Salvadori, Felice Moramarco and Carlotta Magistris will follow. The exhibition is organised in collaboration with Seeyousound International Music Film Festival and with the support of VI.MA AUDIO VIDEO Tecnologie.

The Sun Has No Shadow, 2022
The Sun Has No Shadow is an intimate journey through a series of raves, clubs and live performances: a personal video manifesto and, at the same time, a tribute to the city of London. Further delving into the themes addressed in the film collection Rave Trilogy (2020), The Sun Has No Shadow delves deeper into the communities formed around electronic music, providing a sense of the London context and highlighting the intimacy between those who are part of it. These meta-narratives are portrayed within an intimate and subjective frame, in which peripheral nocturnal views, sequences of dancing people, moments of collective catharsis, merge together with universal reflections, existential dilemmas and different visions. The film focuses particularly on the club FOLD and the daytime rave format UNFOLD, which places the DJ in the centre of the club: this particular use of space becomes the hallmark of an alternative approach to collectivity, forming deep physical connections and a sense of togetherness.

Tresor Tapes, 2022 (Italian Premiere)
Commissioned by TRESOR Berlin for the exhibition Tresor 31 Techno, Berlin und die große Freiheit, held from 08.07.2022 to 28.08.2022 at Kraftwerk (Berlin), Salvadori works with TRESOR’s vast video and sound archives to construct a parallel portrait to The Sun Has No Shadow. Screened side by side, the two films employ different methods of dealing with archives of personal and collective memory and reflecting on the documentation of club culture.

Empathy, 2019
Empathy immerses the viewer in a deep space of deep silence. Four scenes composed of close-ups of friends: the silent movement of the lips and the slow motion effects alienate from the cinematic language, capturing the thoughts, the inner universe of the protagonists. The audience thus becomes an involuntary witness of a sincere and authentic conversation. The very tight close-ups and the absence of sound create an intangible space, made of emotion, estrangement, separation.
