Risvolto — Camille Llobet

On the occasion of Torino Art Week, we are delighted to present the solo exhibition of French artist Camille Llobet, curated in collaboration with the Florence Loewy Gallery in Paris. Risvolto, on view from November 2 to 30, 2019, introduces Camille Llobet’s research to Italy for the first time, exploring the distance between language and its representation, nonverbal expressions of communication, and alternative ways of manifesting emotions. At Recontemporary, four videos and a performance showcase how body movements, sounds, and words can convey multiple meanings.

In the work Majelich (2018), we witness the live interpretation of an opera singer reproducing the first phonemes articulated by the artist’s daughter. Sounds that may initially seem meaningless are, in fact, tied to the genesis of speech.
Camille Llobet employs performance as a tool to analyze the codes of language. Her video Voir ce qui est dit (2016), exemplary of her work, explores two opposing worlds: music and silence. The artist stages a performance involving a conductor and a deaf performer, whose task is to translate music they cannot hear into sign language. Similarly, the video Faire la musique (2017) investigates body language, portraying professional athletes undergoing specific mental training to recreate the movements they make during competitions. Here, Llobet examines the relationship between gesture and memory, drawing on the theory of mirror neurons, which posits that thinking about an action or physically performing it activates the same neural responses in the brain.
From the work Revers, created during the summer of the previous year during an artistic residency at Le Cyclop in France, comes the performance Camille Llobet will enact on the evening of November 1 during the preview of the exhibition. The artist will participate directly, exploring the interplay and synchronization between visual perception and its oral representation.
Concurrently with the opening of Risvolto, Camille Llobet will also exhibit as part of the Artissima Telephone project, scheduled from November 1 to 3 at the OGR – Officine Grandi Riparazioni in Turin.
Camille Llobet
Camille Llobet was born in 1982 in Bonneville, France, and currently lives and works between Sallanches and Paris.
Her works highlight the gap between language and its objects, intentions, and reflections, as well as the ways the body expresses non-verbal communication. By deliberately presenting the physical and mental challenges of channeling emotions, Llobet creates choreographic and musical idiolects—distinctive and unique uses of language that substitute traditional forms, broadening the field of expression.
A graduate of the École Supérieure d’Art de l’Agglomération d’Annecy in 2007, Camille Llobet has showcased her work at major venues such as the Biennale of Contemporary Art in Lyon (2011), the Centre d’Art Contemporain du Parc Saint Léger (2013), and the 61st Salon de Montrouge (2016). She has held several solo exhibitions, including Second (Centre d’Art de Vénissieux, 2014), Partition (Score) (Centre d’Art de Thonon-les-Bains, 2017), Majelich for the Printemps de Septembre Festival (Toulouse, 2018), Idiolecte (Florence Loewy Gallery, Paris, 2019), and Risvolto (Reverse) (Recontemporary, Turin, Italy, 2019).
Her works are part of several French public collections, including FRAC Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, FRAC Limousin, FRAC Grand Large – Haut de France, IAC – Institut d’Art Contemporain de Villeurbanne’s Collection, and FMAC de la Ville de Paris.
Galleria Florence Loewy
Florence Loewy is one of the world’s leading experts on artist books. She founded her gallery in 1989 to focus on promoting rare artist books, editions, and multiples from the 1960s to the present. In 2001, the gallery moved to the Marais district in Paris, creating a larger space to showcase established and emerging artists. Designed by the duo Jakob + MacFarlane, the bookstore launched its exhibition program with General Idea Boutique Cœurs Volants. Subsequent solo exhibitions included those of Michel François (2002), Francesc Ruiz (2003), Tim Maul (2005), Yann Sérandour (2007), Didier Rittener (2007), Sara MacKillop (2010), Florian Bézu (2012), Erik Van der Weijde (2012), Joan Ayrton (2015), and Charlie Jeffery (2016), alongside numerous group exhibitions curated by international curators. The gallery has produced editions with artists such as Robert Barry, Barbara Bloom, Jérémie Gindre, Tim Maul, Jonathan Monk, Didier Rittener, Batia Suter, and Claude Closky. Since March 2017, Florence Loewy has redefined both the layout of the gallery and its program, focusing on the artists it represents. In terms of books, the gallery emphasizes monographic exhibitions, launches, and curated selections from its inventory of artist books.
