ARTISTIC STATEMENT
Pierpaolo Grandinetti's practice investigates the extractive logics that shape contemporary imaging within Capitalocene regimes. Working across documentary, video installation, and creative coding, he focuses on landscapes where matter becomes resource and territory becomes data: quarries, mines, industrial sites, and on the technological processes that translate them, such as machinic vision, photogrammetry, semantic segmentation, and simulation. His research addresses how AI systems treat the visible world as operational, producing images no longer meant for human contemplation but for machines to act upon. These operational images carry power dynamics and material costs that often remain invisible. The work seeks artistic strategies to challenge this anthropocentric and instrumental framework, and to make its extractive gaze legible. Through digitisation, the real is restructured into ethereal forms, such as point clouds, 3D reconstructions, and generative outputs, which Grandinetti treats not as substitutes for reality but as sites of negotiation. It is in the gap between the documented, the algorithmically generated, and what exceeds both that his work looks for other perspectives.
