Glitch Lab lll – Source Code
From 06/12/2024 to 26/01/2025
A free training course aimed at 12 visual artists under 30.
OPEN CALL / Source Code
A free training opportunity for visual artists and filmmakers under 30
An electrical impulse, a disturbance, a system defect. The idea of the glitch, that unexpected flash that flashes across the screen and reveals the very nature of the medium, becomes the starting point for reflecting on contemporary images. These, increasingly characterized by the hybridization of languages and interdisciplinarity, pose crucial challenges for creative young people. Augmented reality, located at the crossroads of multiple approaches to visual language, is not only a tool for observing the world, but also a means for interpreting it, developing an original vision and giving shape to new expressive modes. It is thus configured as a critical and creative opportunity to address current issues, combining artistic sensitivity and technological experimentation.
Born in 2020 to investigate post-pandemic spaces through art and digital, Glitch Lab now reaches its third edition, consolidating itself as a mature training project. After the success of the first two editions, this new phase focuses on the theme of ecofeminism, stimulating reflection on the interconnections between environment, technology and gender issues, with an approach that integrates creative workshops with field explorations in the natural contexts of Turin ( along the Po and Dora rivers) and Biella (on the Cervo torrent).
WHAT IS
Glitch Lab is a free course of laboratory training and highly qualified artistic production that accompanies 12 participants selected through this open call to start the artistic profession and to the creation of a work in augmented reality. The workshop is structured in such a way as to provide participants with the tools to deepen their artistic and technical knowledge of new media, bring technological innovation and the creative dimension into dialogue and expand their network of work contacts and access to the professional world. Participants will be accompanied in the development of their artistic projects through tutoring and meetings with different professionals in the contemporary art and digital technologies sector. The unpublished work in augmented reality – which this year will focus on ecofeminism for a creative exploration of the link between digital, environment and gender issues – will be presented in a collective exhibition curated by Beatrice Zanelli first in Turin, in the spaces of Dorado and, later, in Biella at the Bi-Box Gallery.
THE PROGRAM INCLUDES:
Two Core Sections:
The first phase engages participants in collective study and discussion through theoretical and experiential meetings with industry professionals.
The second phase focuses on technical training and the production of individual projects for the final exhibition. The exhibition is not only a milestone but also the first public recognition of their work.
Workshop Phase: Conducted by national and international educators, the program includes 6 experiential workshops addressing digital art themes related to ecofeminism. These workshops aim to enhance and integrate participants’ practical and theoretical knowledge:
“From Concept to Production: Digital Art” by curator and art advisor Iole Pellion di Persano for Recontemporary
“Art: Ecofeminism and Digital Dialogue?” by curator Francesca Comisso for a.titolo
“Digital Art: From Idea to Promotion” by artist and digital designer Joris Jaccarino for Bepart
“La Dora, Mother River, and Other Stories” by artist, architect, and curator Maurizio Cilli
“Art and Hydrofeminism along the Cervo Stream” by artist, researcher, and cultural practitioner Annalisa Zegna and artist Nicholas Ferrara for Spazio HYDRO
“How Sound Shapes Artistic Production” by music producer Matteo Marini
Technical Tutoring by Professor Francesco Strada from the Polytechnic University of Turin and artistic mentoring by visual artist and filmmaker Irene Dionisio (Wild Strawberries Lab), art historian and curator Beatrice Zanelli (Arteco), and Cripta747 director and founder Elisa Troiano. These sessions focus on the conception and production of artworks using a “learning by doing” approach.
Additionally, one-on-one “on-demand” mentoring is available for each participant, who can seek guidance from their chosen tutors and educators based on their specific creative and production needs.
This year, the Glitch Lab working group will also collaborate with Valentina Noya (Associazione Museo Nazionale del Cinema), Elisa Troiano (Cripta747), and Irene Dionisio (Wild) to co-create a participatory program combining cinema and visual arts for Glitch’s final hub, supported by the coordination of Associazione Gheddo.
In the third phase, the program includes the production and installation of a collective exhibition, first in Turin at Dorado and later in Biella at the Bi-Box Gallery.
